NEOCHMM’s October 16th 6:00 meeting will be a tour of the Lake County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and Lake County Sheriff’s Office Communications Division are located in the Emergency Operations Center at 8505 Garfield Road, Mentor, OH.

All people interested in attending must register by sending me an e-mail at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. so that we can get a count of attendees due to security requirements.

Lake County EMA’s mission is to protect Lake County communities by coordinating and integrating all activities necessary to build, sustain, and improve the capability to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, and recover from threatened or actual natural disasters, acts of terrorism, or other man-made disasters.  One potential threat to Lake County communities would be a radioactive release from the Perry Nuclear Power Plant.

Ed Filppi from the Ohio Department of Public Safety and Bert Mechenbier from the Lake County General Health District will discuss the basic operation of a nuclear power plant, emergency classification levels, and field monitoring teams (FMTs).  The main mission of FMTs is to protect the public.  Lake County is the only county in Ohio and one of a very few across the nation that has field monitoring teams (FMTs) that would search for a radioactive plume, traverse the plume, take air samples, and perform analyses.  Meeting attendees will have an opportunity to see the Emergency Operations Center and FMT vans.

We are located behind (east of) Lakeland Community College.  Garfield Road runs parallel to Rt 306.  The EOC (located in a bunker) is on a secured fenced in site.  The main gate will be open.  Attendees will need to sign into a Guest Log at the reception desk in the facility.
